Having an HIV Test
You can have an HIV test at any appointment or walk-in clinic.
We routinely offer HIV testing to everyone who attends the clinic. Many people with HIV are unaware that they have the infection and are at risk of serious illness that can now be prevented. Most people have a routine test as part of a check up, for "peace of mind"; when starting or ending a relationship or because they have a particular concern about HIV.
The doctor or health adviser can provide any information needed:
- Explain about the HIV blood test
- Give you any information you may need about HIV and transmission
- Check any risks you may have had
- Discuss the implications of a positive and negative result
- Allow time for you to ask any questions
- Give you any further information on reducing your risk in the future, such as safer sex / condom use
Following discussion and your consent to HIV testing the nurse will take a blood sample.
Results are usually provided telephone (or text if negative) after 10 days, or after 1-2 working days in person if you prefer.
Rapid HIV Testing
If you want a Rapid HIV test
please say this to the receptionist when you book an appointment or attend a walk-in clinic.
If you opt to have a rapid HIV test – a pin-prick blood sample will be taken. Your result will be available after 30 minutes.
